First Half 19th Century Napoleonic Peninsular War Snuff Box, "Wellington Generalissimo".

The ebonised papier mache snuff box with a profile of Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley, the later Duke of Wellington, in gold coloured relief with the words "WELLINGTON GENERALISSIMO". The profile is encased in glass with a securing silver coloured bezel.

The Peninsular War (1807 - 1814) was a campaign fought by Britain, Spain and Portugal against France. The British army was under the command of Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley, later to become the Duke of Wellington. In 1812 the Spanish Cortes named Wellington Supreme Commander (Generalissimo). This followed Wellington's victory at the Battle of Salamanca and the liberation of Madrid.

In very good condition with no glass damage. The inner rim is intact. Some nibbles to the base. Wear is consistent with age.

Approximate dimensions are 8.7 cm diameter and 2.7 cm height.
