William IV / Early Victorian Silver Rococo Revival Inkstand with Armorial. Raised on four ornate outswept scrolled bracket feet with shell and leaf detail. The border with scroll, shell and leaf detail. The inkstand has two silver mounted, cut glass inkwells, flanking a central wax holder. Above this is a taperstick holder with shell and flower detail. The snuffer is a later edition.
The armorial indicates that this inkstand was in the possession of General Charles Wedikind Nepean (1794 - 1853) of the 7th Madras Native Infantry. He was the eldest son of Lieutenant General Nicholas Nepean and Johanna Francesca Caroline Wedikind. A heraldry report accompanies this item.
Hallmarked in six places for Birmingham 1837 by Robinson, Edkins & Aston. The snuffer is hallmarked for Birmingham 1842 with an unidentified maker. The bottle holders, attached to the stand, have rubbed hallmarks. One of the securing pins to the underside is also part hallmarked. The inkstand was retailed by S. Smith & Son, 35 King Street, Covent Garden, London.
In excellent condition with moderate surface wear commensurate with age. The glass is also in excellent order with just a couple of tiny flea bites.
Approximate weighable silver weight is 684 grams or 21.99 troy ounces. The collars on the bottles are also hallmarked silver, but are fixed to the glass.
