An Indian Colonial Silver Inkstand with Presentation Inscription to 35 (Madras Presidency) Squadron, RAF from the Madras Governor’s War Fund.
During World War Two 35 Squadron formed part of the Heavy Bomber Night Force and from the beginning of 1941 participated in all major bombing operations, including the first 1000 bomber raid on Cologne. Based at RAF Graveley they were one of five squadrons selected to create the Pathfinder Force and supplied marking aircraft for 425 attacks.
Public and private money were utilised to fund the war effort and appeals for funding were made at home and in the British Commonwealth. No. 35 Squadron benefitted from donations from the Madras Presidency (an administrative subdivision of British India) and was formally named 35 (Madras Presidency) Squadron on 5th January 1942. It is understood that 35 Squadron were presented with at least three Handley Page Halifax bombers by the Madras Presidency.
This inkstand, along with a roller blotter and blotting pad were formally presented to 35 (Madras Presidency) Squadron on March 5th 1948 at RAF Stradishall by Air Marshal A. B. Ellwood. It was hoped that the set would remain in the Officers' mess.
