
Admiral Sir Charles George Fane KCB FZS (1837 - 1909) Turned Oak Chalice, 'A Relic of HMS Victory 1765'. Presented to the Admiral at Christmas 1894, while he was Admiral-Superintendent of HM Dockyard Portsmouth (1892 - 1896). The chalice features a brass roundel depicting the family crest of Fane.
The engraved text reads:
'A RELIC OF HMS VICTORY 1765'
'ADML C G FANE PORTS EXMAS 1894'.
Admiral Fane entered the Royal Navy in 1851, serving in the Black Sea during the Crimean War. After several promotions he served as an Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria and was Captain - Superintendent of HM Dockyard Sheerness. He was promoted to Vice Admiral in 1896 and made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1901.
