He was a British Politician Serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer, First Lord of the Treasury, Foreign Secretary and Secretary of State for India. His peerage was created in 1885 and he was previously known as Sir Stafford Northcote, 8th Baronet of Pynes and Lord of the Manor of Iddesleigh. He was also made Viscount St Cyres at the time of his peerage.
The family seat was Shillands House, Upton Pyne, near Exeter, Devon.
