The Battles of Waterloo, Quatre Bras & The Peninsular War, Major General Sir Alexander Dickson GCB KCH KTS FRGS, George III Silver Presentation Salver.

Of rectangular form with a heavily gadrooned raised border and supported upon four ornate bracket feet.

The salver was presented to Lady Dickson by the Officers of the Field Train Department for the attention of Colonel Sir Alexander Dickson KCB KTS while in command of the artillery in the Peninsula during the campaigns of 1813 and 1814.

General Sir Alexander Dickson (1777 - 1840) was born in Sydenham House, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He served in the Royal Artillery during the 1798 Battle of Minorca and the 1800 Blockade of Malta and Siege of Valetta. During the Peninsular War he served in the Portuguese Artillery. Lord Wellington recognised his abilities and artillery duties became chiefly entrusted to him. He took part in the battles of Busaco and Albuera, as well as the sieges of Olivenza, Badajoz, Ciudad Rodrigo, Almaraz, Salamanca, Burgos and Madrid. In 1813 Marquis Wellington invited Dickson to take command of allied artillery. He subsequently commanded the artillery at Vittoria, Bidassoa, Nivelle, Nive, Adour and Toulouse. In additon to this salver he was presented with four other pieces by the officers of the Field Train Department. The Royal Artillery presented him with a sword of honour.

Dickson returned from the unfortunate Battle of New Orleans, during the American Gulf Campaign, in time to take part in the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo as part of Wellington's artillery staff. He subsequently commanded the British battering train, under Prussian command, during July and August of 1815 at the sieges of various French forts. In 1825 he was appointed as ADC to King George IV. He died in 1840 and was buried with full military honours in Plumstead Churchyard. There is a monument to him at Larkhill, Salisbury.
