A Late 19th Century Indian Colonial Silver Trophy Goblet. The bowl with embossed deity astride various animals. The bowl upon on a knopped stem. The foot with inscription in memory of Captain Alexander Pringle Samuells who died in the Second Afghan Campaign on 7th July 1880. Features regimental badge of the 32nd Punjab Pioneers (32nd Bengal Native Infantry, 32nd Sikh Pioneers).
Captain A. P. Samuells, 32nd Punjab Pioneers, was attached to the 7th Royal Fusiliers throughout the Umbeyla campaign and died of disease contracted on campaign in Afghanistan, during the 2nd Anglo - Afghan War. The Umbeyla campaign, undertaken between 20 October and 23 December 1863, was directed against Muslim tribesmen in Sittana and focused on the village of Malka. The tribesmen had harboured Indian mutineers in 1857 and were still resisting British rule over a decade later.
1857 raised as Punjab Sappers, 1858 became the 24th (Pioneer) Regiment of Punjab Infantry, 1861 became the 32nd Bengal Native Infantry, 1864 became the 32nd (Punjab) Bengal Native Infantry (Pioneers), 1885 became the 32nd (Punjab) Bengal Infantry (Pioneers), 1901 became the 32nd Punjab Pioneers and in 1903 became the 32nd Sikh Pioneers.
Marked to the underside of the base for Orr & Sons of Madras.
In excellent condition with light surface wear commensurate with age.
