Admiral Sir Charles Tyler GCB (1760 - 1835), Captain of HMS Tonnant at The Battle of Trafalgar, Yellow Metal Mounted Bloodstone Armorial Seal.
The arms are those of Tyler and Tyler impaling Leach environed by the circlet and laurel wreath of the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath. These arms commemorate the marriage of Admirl Sir Charles Tyler and Margaret Leach. He joined the Royal Navy, aged 11, in 1771 aboard HMS Barfleur and then rose steadily through the ranks. He saw service during The American Revolutionary War and French Revolutionary Wars, including the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen, under Admiral Lord Nelson.
During the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar he was shot in the thigh whilst commanding HMS Tonnant. Although badly disabled the Tonnant forced the enemy ships Monarca and Algesiras to surrender. During the closing stages of the battle she also captured the Spanish ship San Juan Nepomuceno. This seal dates to no earlier than 1815 when he was appointed as a Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.
