A mid Victorian solid silver claret jug or wine ewer with what appears to be a military inscription. The body profusely detailed with scrolls and flowers in relief. Silver gilt interior with bird and flower finial.

The inscription reads " HIT OR MISS CLUB BELFAST, WON BY CAPT. W J CLARKE AUGUST 2ND 1866. NON EGET JACULIS"  (no need of the shot).

Hallmarked to the main body by Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall (Martin, Hall & Co Ltd), for Sheffield 1865. These marks appear to be overstriking another. The interior of the lid is also hallmarked by the same maker and the lion passant.

In excellent condition with light surface wear commensurate with age.

Approximate weight is 706 grams or 22.7 troy ounces.

Approximate dimensions are 31 cm height and 13 cm width.
