Georgian, George III, Crested Silver Inkstand. Of rectangular form raised on four scroll and acanthus feet. The borders with gadroon, acanthus and shell detail. The inkstand has two cut glass bottles with silver collars and silver lids, a tapersick holder and a compartment for sealing wax. There are also two pen rests, one of which has the armorial. The taperstick holder is crested with gadrooned detail. The bottle lids feature reeded detail.
The armorial is for the Marital Arms of Smyth & Ibbetson. This commemorates the marriage of John Henry Smyth and Sarah Caroline Ibbetson in 1810. John Smyth served in the government of William Pitt the younger as Under Secretary of State for Home Affairs, whilst he was the MP for Cambridge University. A copy of the heraldry report will be supplied with this purchase at no extra cost.
Hallmarked and part hallmarked to the underside of the stand, ink bottle and taperstick bases, bottle collars & mounts and taperstick holder for London 1813 by Solomon Hougham. All of the hallmarks match and all pieces are original.
In excellent order with no silver damage. A couple of very minor nibbles to the bases of the glass bottles. The taperstick holder would have originally had a snuffer attached on a chain.
