An Edwardian Scottish Silver Salver for Vice-Admiral Evelyn Claude Ogilvie Thomson C.B., D.S.O. (1884 - 1941). In 1913, whilst commanding HMS Lizard he was commended by The Admiralty for saving an officer who attempted suicide. During the Battle of Jutland in the First World War he commanded HMS Petard. In December of 1916 he was promoted to Commander. In 1917 he was appointed in command of the destroyer HMS Verdun. In 1936 he was promoted to Rear-Admiral and then Vice-Admiral in 1939.

The inscription on this salver relates to HMS Verdun, when Thomson held the rank of Commander, in 1918. It contains facsimile signatures of the officers of HMS Verdun.

HMS Verdun was launched in 1917 and was assigned to carry home the remains of The Unknown Warrior in 1920. She saw further service during World War Two, mainly escorting east coast convoys. Her ship's bell now hangs in Westminster Abbey close to the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
