A Charles II Silver Lidded Tankard with a Scroll Thumbpiece. The body with a later engraved armorial and the cover with a monogram of HH.

The armorial is the arms of Hodgson and likely to be of the Durham branch of that family. A heraldry report accompanies this item.

Provenance: The Family Collection of the late Countess Mountbatten of Burma. Previously Sir Ernest Cassel (1852 - 1921).

Hallmarked to the body and cover for London 1682 and probably by John Cruttall.  The handle is marked with the maker's mark only. For information regarding the mark please refer to David M. Mitchell, Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London, London, 2017, p.350.

In overall excellent condition with light surface wear commensurate with age. There are some very minor light pressure marks with the most prominent being to the upper part of the handle. The base of the handle is ever so slightly pushed into body. A possible old and small repair to the front of the cover and a tiny split to the underside of the cover next to the hinge.

Approximate weight is 947 grams or 30.4 troy ounces.

Approximate dimensions are 18.5 cm height, 21.5 cm length and 14 cm base diameter.
