The 3rd Cavalry Regiment was formed in the early 1920's  from the 7th Irregular Cavalry (5th Cavalry) and the 17th Irregular Cavalry (8th Lancers). During World War Two the 3rd Cavalry Regiment joined the 11th Indian Infantry Division and were deployed to Malaya to counter the Japanese advance. They fought in the battles at Taiping, Perak, Sungei Pattani, Penang Island, Perak River and Slim River, where two Indian Brigades were annihilated by the Japanese. The Regiment was captured by the Japanese after the fall of Singapore and held captive until the end of the war.
