Admiral Beatty served in the Mahdist War and the conflict resulting from the Boxer Rebellion. He fought at the Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1914 and the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1915. In 1916 he commanded the cruiser fleet at the Battle of Jutland. Later in the war he succeeded Admiral Jellicoe as Commander in Chief of the Grand Fleet.

There is a circular shaped crack under the glaze which does not break the surface of the tile. This is possibly a firing fault and is only really visible when holding the tile at a certain angle. The last three photos show this.
