A French Bronze Relief Medallion to Commemorate the Launch of the French Navy Aviso 'Bougainville' in 1931 and Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729 - 1811) a French Navy Admiral and Explorer.

Bougainville class avisos were designed to operate in the French colonies of Africa and Asia, mainly stationed in the Indian Ocean. The Bougainville was launched in April 1931. During World War II the ship was part of Vichy France and was sunk by her sister ship Savorgnan de Brazza in 1940 during the Battle of Gabon. She was refloated in 1941, but sank again and eventually broken up in 1952.

Admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729 - 1811) was a French Navy Admiral and Explorer. he took part in the Seven Years War in America and the American Revolutionary War. In 1764 he completed a circumnavigation of the globe. The Bougainvillea flower and Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea are named after him.

In good condition with moderate to high surface wear and patina. High wear to the outer rim.
