19th Century Metalware Inkstand as Napoleon's Tomb. Possibly French, or German, in origin. The cover with a gilded Napoleon's hat upon a gilded cushion, with a gilded N to the side. With the cover removed it reveals a gilded inkwell and pounce pot. There are two holes in this section for holding dip pens. This whole section can be removed to reveal a covered compartment containing a gilded relief figure of Napoleon at rest. This section can also be lifted out. The inkstand is raised on four gilded feet on a rectangular plinth.
In excellent condition with moderate surface wear commensurate with age. The pounce pot cover is fixed in place and cannot be removed. Two retaining nuts missing from the underside but nothing is loose.
