General Louis Auguste Victor de Ghaisnes de Bourmont and The French Capture of the Emperor's Fort, Algiers July 4th 1830, Circular Papier Mache Snuff Box, circa 1830.

In 1830, the French captured the Emperor's Fort in Algiers, a key event in the French conquest of Algiers. This victory marked a significant turning point in the invasion, leading to the fall of Algiers and the end of Ottoman rule in the city. The fort, originally built in response to Emperor Charles V's 1541 attack, was named in his honor by the French. General Louis Auguste Victor de Ghaisnes de Bourmont was Commander of the French forces, under Charles X, during the conquest of Algeria (1830). He obtained the capitulation of Algiers and was made Marshal of France. Upon the July Revolution he refused allegiance to Louis Philippe and was forced into exile, returning to France after the amnesty of 1840.
