Raglan was commissioned in 1804 and served as aide-de-camp to Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, in the Peninsular War and was present at the battles of Rolica and Vimeiro. He was promoted to Brevet-Major after the battle of Fuentes d'Onoro and was made Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in 1812. Raglan had his right arm amputated due to wounds received at the Battle of Waterloo. Later in 1815 Wellington recommended him as the aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent, with the rank of Colonel. In 1853 Raglan was placed in charge of British soldiers for the start of the Crimean War. He was promoted to General in 1854. During the Battle of Balaclava he issued the ambiguous order that led to the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade. In 1855 he died in the Crimea from the effects of dysentery and was buried in Badminton.
