A large Georgian, George III, silver tankard with coal mining interest. Hallmarked for London 1778 by John King. Features embossed decoration and a social history inscription relating to Southgate Colliery, which was located in Clowne, Derbyshire from 1878 to 1929.
In excellent order with no dents or creases. A small split under thumb piece of handle, which has been repaired (you can hear a tiny silver filing rattle inside the handle!). An old professional repair around base as is common in tankards of this age.
Approximate weight is 16 1/2 troy ounces or 515 grams.
Approximate dimensions are 15.5 cm height and 12 cm base diameter.
