Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850 – 1916) was a British army officer who fought in Sudan and was Chief of Staff in the Second Boer War. From 1902 - 1909 he was Commander in Chief, India. At the start of the First World War he came Secretary of State for War. He was killed in 1916 on HMS Hampshire, when she was struck by a German mine, near Orkney in Scotland.
