In this portrait Napoleon presents himself as emperor of the French in the full coronation regalia he wore in 1804. Napoleon’s coronation ceremony took place in the Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris in 1804. His head is adorned with a crown of gold laurels and he wears the gold collar of the Legion of Honour.
The original portrait was by Francois Gerard and depicted a full length profile of Napoleon.
