Aurora fought in the Russo Japanese War and took part in the 1905 Battle of Tsushima. Aurora is said to have fired the first shot which signalled the attack on the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg during the October Revolution of 1917. The ship's captain was killed when he tried to surpress the revolt. During World War Two her guns were removed and used in the defence of Leningrad. She is now preserved as a museum ship in Saint Petersburg.
