Following success in the French Revolutionary Wars Blücher was promoted to Major General in 1794 and Lieutenant General in 1801. He commanded the Cavalry Corps during the Napoleonic Wars from 1806. He was 71 years old  and appointed a full General when war broke out between Prussia and France in 1813. He fought Napoleon at the Battles of Lutzen, Bautzen and Katzbach.

During the 1813 Battle of Leipzig Blücher commanded the Prussian army of Silesia and defeated Napoleon. For this victory he was made Field Marshal and Prince of Wahlstatt. Blücher subsequently controlled the Prussian army of the Lower Rhine, engaging Napoleon at the Battles of Ligny and Waterloo.
