An Early 19th Century Papier Mache Snuff Box Depicting Prince Klemens von Metternich (Austria), Viscount Castlereagh (Britain) and Charles Talleyrand (France). All three men participated in the 1814 Treaty of Paris and the 1814- 1815 Congress of Vienna.

The Treaty of Paris ended the Napoleonic Wars between France and the Sixth Coalition. The Congress of Vienna was a series of international diplomatic meetings to discuss and agree upon a possible new layout of the European political and constitutional order after the downfall of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. It sought to bring about a balance of power in Europe and prevent further conflict. The Congress of Vienna dissolved the Napoleonic world and attempted to restore the monarchies Napoleon had overthrown. The Congress was the first occasion in history where on a continental scale, national representatives came together to formulate treaties instead of relying mostly on messages between the several capitals.

Just nine days after signing the Final Act Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, following his escape from exile in Elba.
